Synopsis

Shakespearean Comedy on the Ballet Stage: Dancing Through Laughter and Tears
How to Dance the Witty Words of Shakespeare's Most Intricate Play: John Cranko's Masterclass in 'The Taming of the Shrew'"

In a performance born in 1969, at the height of choreographer John Cranko's love for the revived theater, there is plenty of laughter, lyricism, passion, and an abundance of dances, choreographed to the very beat of the music. Elegant, intricately composed, amusing, fiery, and tender dances that convey as much as the spoken word.

From the desire to bring the famous Shakespearean comedy to the dance stage emerged a remarkable blend of classical ballet (which, as known, originated in palaces) and street theater with its risqué jokes, lifted skirts, coarse gestures, and comedic characters. The Stuttgart Ballet company dances 'The Taming of the Shrew,' created specifically for this theater, with genuine passion and tenderness. They delight the audience not only with their refined dance but also with a cascade of brilliant acting, making them laugh heartily and ponder deeply.
